TIME AND DATE

Town Meeting Day

Town Meeting Day is a public holiday that is celebrated every year in Vermont. The day is celebrated on the first Tuesday in March. This year that is March 5. As this is a public holiday, expect most stores, banks and services to be closed or have reduced opening hours.

It is a day when the people of Vermont gather to discuss and vote on various issues that are important to them.

The first Town Meeting Day took place on March 3rd, 1781, when the state of Vermont was still a colony of New York. Governor Thomas Chittenden called for a meeting with the people to discuss his proposal for Vermont's constitution. More than 100 people attended and its attendees were split on the idea of whether to form a republic or continue as a colony. After much debate, it was decided that Vermont would be just as independent as the other states.
